I recently recieved a call from a creditor that was a law firm claiming they will sue me if I don’t pay. However, I pulled up my credit report at equifax and the account that they are talking about is not there. I believe it was charged off. Do I still have to pay it and can they still sue me?

Hello. This is really a legal question that I cannot answer but what I can tell you is that it depends on how old the debt is. There is a time period after which the debt “expires” and is no longer deemed collectable however, I believe that takes many years. It sounds like your debt was sold to a collector who will try and collect whatever they can. I suggest you try and find out more about the situation and contact an attorney who will tell you specifically what your rights are. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
